Enhancing Electrocatalytic Glycerol Oxidation Via Cu-Deposited Nickel Foam: Theoretical Insights and Experimental Validation / C.C.Nguyen, E.Korneeva, Van Tiep Nguyen, [a.o.]. – Text : electronic // Journal of Power Sources. – 2026. – Vol. 695. – P. 241319. – URL: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jpowsour.2026.241319. – Bibliogr.: 37.
Metallic Cu-Ni electrocatalysts have emerged as attractive candidates for glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) applications. However, achieving highly crystalline metallic phases with strong interfacial coupling and suppressed hydroxide formation remains challenging. In this work, density functional theory calculations were first employed to prove the potential of the Cu-Ni electrocatalyst in facilitating the glycerol oxidation reaction. Next, a metallic Cu-deposited Ni foam electrocatalyst (denoted as Cu@NF-Au/CS) was synthesized via in-situ hydrothermal growth of Cu on Ni foam using AuCl&sub(4)&sup(−) ions and chitosan as interfacial regulators. XRD, XPS, TEM, and PAS analyses confirmed the formation of highly crystalline metallic Cu with suppressed Ni(OH)&sub(2) formation and enhanced Cu-Ni electronic coupling. PAS and electron momentum distribution analyses revealed defect-induced electron delocalization and the emergence of a distinct interfacial electronic state in Cu@NF-Au/CS. Electrochemically, Cu@NF-Au/CS exhibited outstanding GOR activity, requiring only 1.27 and 1.76 V vs. RHE to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm&sup(−2), respectively, together with a low Tafel slope of 103 mV·dec&sup(−1) and excellent operational stability over 30 h at 1.46 V vs. RHE. The enhanced performance originates from the synergistic interplay of Cu-Ni interfaces, improved charge transfer, and optimized adsorption behavio
