Ag Nanoparticle-Decorated Porous Flower-Like NiO Microspheres for Enhanced Hydrogen Gas Sensing / T.C.D.Nguyen, Tiep Van Nguyen, E.Korneeva, [a.o.]. – Text : electronic // Journal of Alloys and Compounds. – 2026. – Vol. 1082. – P. 191399. – URL: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jallcom.2026.191399. – Bibliogr.: 60.
Highly sensitive and cost-effective hydrogen (H&sub(2)) sensors are crucial for the safe use of hydrogen in clean energy and industrial applications. Herein, porous flower-like NiO microspheres decorated with Ag nanoparticles were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal-assisted reduction process followed by calcination. The hierarchical porous architecture was well preserved after Ag decoration, while the optimized 2Ag–NiO sample exhibited well-dispersed Ag nanoparticles on the porous NiO nanosheets. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of the porous structure and Ag functionalization, the 2Ag–NiO sensor exhibited an enhanced H&sub(2) response of ~7.0 toward 200 ppm H&sub(2) at an optimum operating temperature of 350 &sup(o)C. In addition, the sensor demonstrated rapid response/recovery characteristics, good repeatability, remarkable long-term stability over five months, and preferential response toward H2 under the tested conditions, although CO and H2S produced comparable responses in the 1–10 ppm range. The lowest experimentally verified H&sub(2) concentration was 1 ppm, while 0.175 ppm is reported only as a slope-based calculated detection-limit estimate. The enhanced sensing behavior is proposed to arise from surface oxygen chemistry, Ag-assisted catalytic sensitization, and possible interfacial electronic contributions at Ag/NiO contacts. These findings demonstrate a cost-effective strategy for improving NiO-based H&sub(2) sensing.
