Cycle-Controlled Post-Synthesis Processing of Ag-Cu Nanoparticles: A Key to Unlocking Femtomolar SERS Sensitivity / N.B.T.Pham, K.Mamatkulov, G.Arzumanyan, [a.o.]. – Text : electronic // Materials Chemistry and Physics. – 2026. – Vol. 370. – P. 133105. – URL: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.matchemphys.2026.133105. – Bibliogr.: 82.
The fabrication of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates requires optimization of nanostructures and the maintenance of clean surfaces, with the objective of maximizing sensitivity. The present study investigates post-synthesis centrifugation as a critical treatment to enhance the SERS performance of Ag-Cu nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized via the microwave-assisted polyol method. The application of multiple centrifugation cycles (1-12) in a systematic manner has been demonstrated to be a successful method of controlling NP aggregation and reducing residual polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and ethylene glycol (EG) surfactants. The substrate obtained after the 9th cycle demonstrated optimal performance, achieving femtomolar-level detection of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) (10&sup(−15) M) with an extraordinary analytical enhancement factor of ∼10&sup(10) and an acceptable reproducibility. The enhancement is attributed to two synergistic effects: (1) the electromagnetic mechanism, boosted by the formation of oligomer structures (dimer, trimer, tetramer) with tuned interparticle gaps; and (2) the chemical mechanism, which is improved by the reduction of surfactant-derived background noise, thus strengthening the potential for charge transfer between substrate and analyte
