One of the key components of the YuMO small-angle neutron scattering spectrometer is the direct beam detector (DBD), located at the end of the neutron beam path. The DBD serves to measure the spectrum of neutrons passing through the sample, specifically the sample’s transmission as a function of neutron wavelength. This setup allows for measuring total nuclear cross-section of neutrons with various targets using the transmission method. The DBD is also used to normalize the data in case of scattering on the samples having high scattering cross-section or strong absorption. DBD is critical to align the collimation system and to adjust the chopper (synchronizing the chopper window to suppress the background neutrons). In this article we present the results of measurements using a gas-proportional multiwire DBD with a boron converter (&sup(10)B&sub(4)C). The spectra obtained after the recent upgrade of this detector (the converter was replaced, the voltage was optimized, and the results of the prototype were taken into account) are shown. The converter (with enrichment up to 96% of &sup(10)B) is now symmetrical and has a larger area. In the current study, the empty beam spectra (without a sample in the beam) at the DBD were used to evaluate the detector’s performance, along with spectra from the first ring of the scattered neutron detector (the farthest from the sample, corresponding to the smallest scattering angles) with a vanadium standard in front of it. Thus, the scattering detector allows the monitoring of the flux density on the sample. As a result of the upgrade, the detector count increased by at least a factor of two.
