Recovery of Platinum Group Metals from Spent Automotive Catalyst Leachates Using Functional Track-Etched Membranes / M.Z.Ngayeka, N.Drozhzhin, I.Vinogradov, A.Rossouw, A.Nechaev, [a.o.]. – Text : electronic // Chemical Engineering Journal: Green and Sustainable. – 2026. – Vol. 3. – P. 100079. – URL: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cejgas.2026.100079. – Bibliogr.: 81.
This study details the fabrication of composite track-etched membranes (TM) designed for the recovery of platinum group metals (Pd(II), Pt(IV), Rh(III)) from spent automotive catalyst leachates. TETA-modified polymer nanofibers were electrospun onto a track-etched membrane template. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN), polysulfone (PSF) and polystyrene (PST) were blended with triethylenetetramine (TETA) to enhance the selective uptake of platinum, rhodium and palladium from the leach solutions. The composites were characterized using microanalysis, ATR-FTIR, XPS, SEM, TGA, and contact angle measurements, and results confirmed successful modification and electrospinning of polymers onto TM. SEM revealed the morphology of nanofibers while ATR-FTIR, XPS and TGA indicated successful modification. Contact angle measurements showed that PAN/TETA PET TM-Ti was more hydrophilic than PST/TETA PET TM-Ti and PSF/TETA PET TM-Ti. Based on microanalysis, PAN/TETA PET TM-Ti had the highest ligand loading (2.081 mmol.g&sup(−1)) compared to PST/TETA PET TM-Ti (0.4625 mmol.g−1) and PSF/TETA PET TM-Ti (0.6014 mmol.g&sup(−1)). PAN/TETA PET TM-Ti showed 90% adsorption of Pt followed by Pd and Rh at an equilibrium adsorption time of 15 min. The batch adsorption of platinum onto PAN/TETA PET TM-Ti fitted the Langmuir isotherm while palladium and rhodium both fitted the Freundlich isotherm, and the single metal loading capacities were Pt = 0.640 mg.g&sup(−1), Pd = 0.0738 mg.g&sup(−1) and Rh = 0.0348 mg.g&sup(−1). PAN/TETA PET TM-Ti was used in crossflow filtration, and 1.188 mg.g&sup(−1) Pd, 1.129 mg.g&sup(−1) Pt and 0.321 mg.g&sup(−1) were recovered after 70 mL at 3 mL/min suggesting suitability for recovery of PGMs under high flux conditions. The challenge remains selective recovery (selective desorption) from the membrane which requires attention in future.
