The High-Energy Ray Observatory Prototype Beam Tests at CERN SPS / Kh.Karatash, O.Kalikulov, N.Saduyev, I.Satyshev, A.Pan, Sh.Utey. – Text : electronic // Advances in Space Research. – 2026. – Vol. 77, No. 8. – P. 8510-8520. – URL: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.asr.2025.10.011. – Bibliogr.: p. 8520.
The High-Energy Ray Observatory (HERO) is a space experiment based on a tungsten-scintillator image calorimeter for the direct study of cosmic rays (CR). The HERO mission will make it possible to measure the energy spectra of CR nuclei for energies up to 1000 TeV with very high precision and energy resolution and study the fine structure of the spectra. The effective geometry factor of the apparatus will be more than 16 m2 sr for protons. A borated scintillator will be employed, allowing the measurement of an additional signal from neutrons that have been moderated to thermal energies for alpha particle production. This capability enhances the discrimination between the electromagnetic and hadron–nuclear components of CR across the entire energy range. This paper presents the results of a beam test of the HERO prototype detector at CERN, along with Monte Carlo simulations of both this prototype and a new HERO detector design
