A new variational-type method for constructing the bound-state wave function of a few-body system is proposed. Instead of minimizing the expectation value of the exact Hamiltonian, as it is done within the traditional variational approach, in the proposed method the wave function is constructed by finding an approximate Hamiltonian for which the trial function is an exact eigenfunction with a given (experimentally known) eigenenergy. The adjustable parameters in the trial function are varied in order to minimize the difference between the exact and approximate Hamiltonians. In order to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the new method, the two-channel (*3𝑆&sub(1)−*3𝐷&sub(1)) wave function of the deuteron is constructed.
