Active Biomonitoring of Industrial Pollution: Comparative Assessment of Potentially Toxic Element Accumulation in Bioindicators Exposed in Yaroslavl and Electrostal, Russia / K.Vergel, I.Zinicovscaia. – Text : electronic // Environmental Monitoring and Assessment. – 2025. – Vol. 197, No. 12. – P. 1332. – URL: https://doi.org/10.1007/s10661-025-14772-2. – Bibliogr.: P. 1332-(12-14).
Studying the impact of industrial enterprises on the environment is crucial for maintaining living conditions and safeguarding public health. To assess this impact, research was conducted on air pollution caused by two industrial sites. During the summers of 2022 and 2023, moss bags were exposed around two industrial zones: an oil refinery plant in Yaroslavl and the Electrostal industrial zone. Using two analytical techniques, the content of 15 elements (Al, Ba, Co, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, P, Pb, Sr, S, V, Zn, and Hg) was determined in both exposed and unexposed moss bags. Nearly all exposure sites showed varying levels of element accumulation, with the strongest accumulation observed around the Electrostal industrial zone. Relative accumulation and contamination factor were used to evaluate the degree of moss enrichment and identify groups of elements contributing to air pollution. Principle component analysis revealed two groups of elements with common sources of origin mainly related to metallurgical activities, oil refining, and transport. Additionally, the potential ecological risk index was applied to assess human health risks, demonstrating differing environmental impacts between the two industrial plants.
