Helium–Vacancy Complexes and Defect Engineering in W–Ni Heavy Alloys for Fusion Applications / S.F.Samadov, N.V.M.Trung, A.A.Sidorin, E.Popov, O.S.Orlov, A.S.Doroshkevich, [a.o.]. – Text : electronic // Micro and Nanostructures. – 2026. – Vol. 220. – P. 208891. – URL: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.micrna.2026.208891. – Bibliogr.: 69.
Defect evolution in two-phase W–Ni alloys under 2.5 MeV He&sup(+) irradiation was investigated using PALS, DBS, EMD, and first-principles calculations. Irradiation was performed over fluences from 3.3 × 10&sup(14) to 1.1 × 10&sup(17) ions cm&sup(−2). PALS shows redistribution of positron annihilation from bulk-like regions to defect-related states, with systematic decreases in both lifetime components while the mean lifetime remains nearly constant. This behavior indicates compensation between increasing defect trapping probability and decreasing effective open volume. Calculations show that empty vacancies alone cannot explain the observed lifetime evolution; the results strongly support the contribution of helium-filled vacancies and vacancy-cluster complexes. DBS and EMD confirm a multicomponent, depth-dependent defect structure with electronic fingerprints of helium-modified annihilation environments. The results establish a consistent defect fingerprint for He&sup(+)-irradiated W–Ni alloys and clarify helium retention and defect stabilization mechanisms important for designing radiation-tolerant plasma-facing and structural materials for future fusion reactors under severe irradiation and thermal loading conditions
