The Structural and Gamma Radiation Shielding Characteristics of Plastic-Tungsten Composites / A.A.Rotkovich, T.N.Vershinina, [a.o.]. – Text : electronic // Radiation Physics and Chemistry. – 2026. – Vol. 247. – P. 114041. – URL: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.radphyschem.2026.114041. – Bibliogr.: p. 114041-(8-9).
A composite material comprising a polymer matrix of polyethylene and W was produced by thermo-pressing. The radiation shielding characteristics of the tungsten composites, including linear attenuation coefficients, half-value layer, lead equivalent thickness, transmission factor, and radiation protection efficiency, were determined experimentally. The measured values were then compared with those calculated using the XCOM software. It was observed that the half-value layer of the tungsten composites was reduced for low energy (33 keV) compared to other energy levels, indicating that the thin tungsten composite samples were effective in shielding against low energy photons. With regard to the efficiency of the radiation shielding, it was found that the composite sample containing 80 mass% tungsten exhibited the highest efficiency. The results demonstrate that the tungsten-doped composites exhibit effective gamma radiation shielding performance, particularly the sample with the highest concentration of tungsten
