A Monte Carlo simulation model based on Geant4 toolkit has been developed to simulate the production of heavy-nuclei recoils and their trajectories through the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS2 (Spectrometer for Heavy Atoms and Nuclear Structure-2). Methods of the simulation model are presented and several physics processes were implemented in Geant4. A set of average charge states of heavy ions measured at SHANS2 in helium gas are presented and a new empirical formula based on the experimental data was derived to describe the charge-exchange process. The simulated results for the focal plane image size of recoils, magnetic rigidity dispersion, and transmission efficiency were compared with the data obtained in &sup(169)Tm(&sup(40)Ar, 4-5n)&sup(204,205) Fr and &sup(208)Pb(&sup(48)Ca, 2n)&sup(254)No reactions. Good agreement between simulation and experimental results is found, which allows us to use the model for tuning the separator in future experiments aimed at investigations of the heaviest nuclei.
