Carbon fibers obtained from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) are attracting increasing attention due to their promising applications in various industries. Their complex structure requires analysis at different length scales using appropriate analytical methods. In this paper, the microstructure of three types of PAN carbon fibers – virgin, reduced, and functionalized – is investigated using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Characteristic sizes of elongated nano-objects – fibrils for each type of carbon fiber and features of their surfaces and distribution inside the fiber were determined
