It is shown that in the presence of carbon in Fe&sub(74)Ga&sub(26) and Fe&sub(74)(Ga,Al)&sub(26) alloys, perovskite-like structure of the E2&sub(1) type (also known as κ-carbide) can form. The results were obtained in high-resolution neutron diffraction experiments on bulk samples and confirmed by measurements of X-ray and electron diffraction patterns. The main structural phase in the studied alloys is mesoscopic clusters D0&sub(3) randomly embedded in a B2 matrix. Regions with the E2&sub(1) phase are observed both along the grain boundaries and in the volume of D0&sub(3). For the first time, the quantitative structural and crystallographic characteristics of the κ-carbide phase in Fe-Ga based alloys were precisely determined and the presence of E2&sub(1)-I and E2&sub(1)-II phases with slightly different compositions was proved. Their linear dependence on the gallium content was demonstrated. As Fe&sub(3)(Ga,Al) alloys exhibit also an enhanced magnetostriction, the presence of the E2&sub(1) phase should be considered in future, which has not been done so far.
