In this work, we present a method for generating ultrashort electrical pulses using a Step Recovery Diode (SRD)-based pulse shaper, achieving temporal properties on the order of a hundred picoseconds and operating at repetition rates of up to tens of MHz. These pulses drive inexpensive laser diodes, with their temporal characteristics measured using advanced detection techniques that achieve high time resolution through Silicon Photomultipliers and a start/stop method utilizing single-photon arrival times. The system's performance was validated across a broad range of light intensities by operating the lasers under varying applied voltages, achieving time resolution better than 100 ps. The best time resolution achieved was about 50 ps. Our proposed solution addresses the limitations of conventional high-precision laser systems by offering a simple, cost-effective alternative that can be implemented for less or about hundred US dollars. This method is applicable to Time-Domain Diffuse Optics (TD-DO) and similar fields, where adjustable light intensity and reliable time resolution are important.
