We show that the topological Kitaev model can be placed in the context of phenomena associated with strongly correlated electron systems. This can be achieved implementing the Gutzwiller projection of the conventional -wave BCS superconductor. Within that approach, neither spin–orbit coupling nor time-reversal symmetry breaking are needed to produce such an effect
