Neutron Star Equation of State / D.D.Ofengeim, E.E.Kolomeitsev, P.S.Shternin. – Text : electronic // Encyclopedia of Astrophysics. In 5 volumes. Vol. 3. Compact objects : Reference Work / Ed.: J.J.Andrews. – [б. м.] Elsevier Inc., 2026. – P. 160-204. – URL: https://doi.org/10.1016/B978-0-443-21439-4.00137-1.
This chapter examines the intricate nature of the equation of state of neutron stars—the fundamental relationship between pressure, density, and composition in the superdense nuclear matter of their interiors. It explores the theoretical frameworks and observational methods that provide insights into the extreme conditions within neutron star cores, which occupy the main part of the stars; volume. Two major approaches are discussed: the “top-down” perspective, rooted in nuclear physics and experimental data, and the “bottom-up” approach, based on astrophysical observations. Despite significant progress, the precise equation of state remains uncertain, particularly at the high-density regimes inaccessible to laboratory experiments. By synthesizing findings from nuclear physics and astrophysics, this chapter provides an overview of the current understanding of neutron star matter and the constraints on the equation of state derived from diverse observational phenomena. – ( ; Vol. 3) .
