The image artistically represents the femtosecond laser-mediated fabrication of PdSe&sub(2-x) nanoparticles from a bulk PdSe&sub(2) crystal. In contrast to the crystalline precursor, NPs are amorphous with higher concentration of broken chemical bonds and Selenium vacancies on the surface, which activate the NPs multiple functionalities for SERS, photocatalysis and photothermal conversion. Surface of amorphous NPs efficiently traps various dies and analytes (small crystallites in the image) and improves SERS, allegorically represented in the image via Raman spectrum.
