The spatial distribution and structural characteristics of pores and cracks inside model ceramic bricks were studied using X-ray tomography. Experiments were prepared using different types of model brick models with varying contents of clay, agricultural ash and quartz in initial raw material mixtures. Comparative analysis of common image segmentation methods was performed based on the obtained tomography data. As a result, Otsu's global thresholding with an additional image contrast enhancement was proposed for the segmentation of pores and cracks in tomography images of ceramic bricks. The spatial distribution of pores and cracks was obtained by using the new method for an automatic volume-of-interest determination and the classification of voids by their deviation from an ideal spherical shape. A procedure for automatic reconstruction of sample's boundaries based on the distance transform and morphological reconstruction is also proposed. The results obtained from X-ray tomography image analysis showed how the difference in raw materials mixture contribute to the voids spatial distribution and their morphology.
