Inherent Luminescence in Undoped Polystyrene Microbeads Supporting Whispering-Gallery Modes / E.O.Soloveva, N.S.Kirilkin, [a.o.]. – Text : electronic // Optical Materials. – 2025. – Vol. 165. – P. 117058. – URL: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.optmat.2025.117058. – Bibliogr.: 41.
Biological applications of emitting polymer particles as whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonators impose limitations on the choice of resonator materials in terms of biocompatibility and sustainable emission. While many previous studies rely on toxic or photobleachable dopants, this work explores the luminescence properties of polystyrene microspheres synthesized without the incorporation of any luminophores. Polystyrene microspheres were prepared by seeded copolymerization of styrene with an average sphere diameter of 5.34*mm. It has been demonstrated that the microspheres themselves exhibit intense luminescence in the wavelength range from 400 to 650 nm under excitation with 405 nm lasers. Additionally, the emission spectra of polymer particles exhibit narrow resonant peaks, which correspond to whispering gallery modes. The study of the dependence of the intensity of the WGM peaks on the power density of the excitation radiation has shown that it is sublinear with a characteristic saturation. In addition, the spheres were encapsulated in living cells, showed an excellent viability
