A brief history of the formation of the collaboration of Vanderbilt, the Flerov Laboratory in Russia, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory and then Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory joining to obtain a target of *2*4*9Bk to be used to discover the new element Z = 117 is described first. The production and separation of the *2*4*9Bk then follow. Two experiments and their results from the bombardment of *2*4*9Bk with *4*8Ca in the Dubna cyclotron and new results of confirmation in GSI in Germany are presented. Finally, the process of the certification of our discovery of the new element 117 and naming it for the State of Tennessee are described…
